Binnelanders !

On the 9th and 10th of April, the landlocked Ultimate community of South Africa came together for the last tournament in the lead up to Nationals and the second biggest tournament in Gauteng, BINNELANDERS.

This year the tournament was held at the University of Witwatersrand pristine cricket oval and had two fields running simultaneously.

The participating teams were as follows :

  1. Bloemfontein
  2. Donkeys
  3. Frankenteam (a pickup team comprised of players from Polokwane, Durban and Johannesburg)
  4. Skyveld
  5. Spirits (a pickup team comprised of players from Soweto, Potchefstroom and Johannesburg)
  6. Tuks Labradors
  7. Ultitude
  8. Wits VooDoo Kudus

This meant over 130 players attending !  The tournament also followed the WFDF rules of 3 women on a line, which almost all teams were able to maintain with 4 to 6 women per team.

The GFDA’s new shade cover made its debut and was very much appreciated by tired and sweaty players looking for a  break.  Look out for it at all future GFDA tournaments !

Some out of town players gave the following feedback :

Cobus : “Team Spirit, aka (Soweto, Potch and Canada) spirit was high and everyone was ready for action.   Generally all the players felt like they had a great time, especially when we had those unexpected scores in the end zone.  The tournament showed players from this team that even if you come together not knowing each others game play, you can make it work and have a lot of fun at the end of the day.”

Christiaan : “As it was my first time at Binnelanders, I really had no idea what to expect. We (Bloem) were very excited about the tournament, as we have a lot of new blood in the team and had 6 players making tournament debuts for the club. All of our debutants as well as the rest of the team continued to improve game after game and showed what we are capable of when we got rid of the initial nerves. Frankenteam were probably our biggest surprise, mostly because we had no idea who to expect in their team. My personal highlight was playing against Donkeys as they are always a very good team to learn from, but mostly because it’s a very well spirited side.

The final standings were as follows :

  1. Donkeys
  2. Ultitude
  3. Frankenteam
  4. Bloem
  5. Skyveld
  6. Tuks
  7. Spirits
  8. Wits

SoTG – Skyveld

MVP Male – Devin from Ultitude

MVP Female – Andy from Skyveld

Thank you to everyone for an awesome tournament !
