By Baden Dowie (Gauteng Ultimate Youth Development Officer)

It was a great year for Youth Ultimate in Gauteng, with both private and government schools getting in on the the action. September being ultimate tournament season for Gauteng schools, Gauteng Ultimate hosted two action packed, high flying ultimate youth tournaments this year.

Soweto Schools Ultimate Tournament- Protea South Multipurpose Sports Hall 9th September 2017

Participating schools included Hitekani Primary, Isiseko Primary, Igugu Primary and Elsie Ngidi Primary. Each school presented a junior side and a senior side. Tournament was run on a “Round Robin” format, each game consisting of 30 min games. It was a brilliant day of ultimate. All players got lots of game time and were loving the competition, by the end of the day the top two teams were:

First place senior school:    Hitekani Primary

First place junior School: Elsie Ngidi Primary

Kaya FM Sports Commentator Sandile Roy van Heerden joined us on the day to capture our story for the Kaya FM  viewers – you can see the video here.

Out of all the youth ultimate programs in Gauteng, these Soweto schools are playing  consistently thanks to a dedicated team of coaches. Big thanks to these 3 amazing youth mentors and sports coaches for building the Soweto Youth Ultimate Development program, (Left to right) Chief Masheane Kolobe, Zwele Nkone and Mr Pule.

Reddam House College Bedfordview Gauteng Ultimate Schools Tournament 16th September 2017

Participating schools included Reddam House College Bedfordview, Hitekani Primary, Isiseko Primary, and Elsie Ngidi Primary. Tournament was run on a “Round Robin” format, each game consisting of 30 min games. With the round robin format, every school has the opportunity to play all participants at the tournament, the winner was determined by the amount of points gathered by every game played. The team with the highest score takes the overall win.

Its was a spectacular day of ultimate with excellent spirit. Our coaches acted as sideline observers assisting with very scarce infringement calls. Our students played highly competitively and with great integrity upholding the ethos of The Spirit of the Game.

The day’s results were:

  1. Hitekani         28 points
  2. Elsie Ngidi     17 points
  3. Isiseko            15 points
  4. Reddam         14 points
