The Binnelanders tournament this year was the biggest that it has ever been, with 12 teams competing from as far afield as Bloemfontein and Pietermaritzburg. The Wits’ organised tournament was a roaring success, with exciting games and great spirit all around. We had to compete with the weather at times, but braved rain and shine with typical Ultimate determination. Binnelanders 2018 showed just how determined Ultimate players are, with the Wits 2nd team and Discs of Hazard starting their game despite the downpour that ensued.
Skyveld and Long Donkeys faced off in an exciting final, ending just in time to avoid the second downpour of the tournament. Skyveld brought the Skyfire and gave the Long Donkeys a run for their money, coming off second best with the Donkeys winning 15 – 9. Rangers bested 4th Prime in the playoff for 3rd and 4th place, with both teams putting up a great fight. The spirit of the tournament was incredible with all teams having fun and pushing themselves to be the most spirited of the tournament.
MVP Man was awarded to Ryan Martin of Long Donkeys and MVP woman was awarded to Andy Goldberg of Skyveld. Best D Man was awarded to Justus Immelman of Skyveld, and Best D Woman was awarded to Jamie Janse van Rensburg of Ultitude. Skyveld topped the spirit scores, followed by BUF, Donkeys, Disks of Hazzard and Ultitude. With SOTG being a critical part of the wondrous sport we play, the teams showed us how capable they are on the field as well as in spirit.
Some wonderful memories were made, and friendships forged on and off the field in an epic display of spirit. Thank you to all teams for making the trek to Wits and for bringing your A game. It was especially exciting to see the growth of Wits and Potch, who each fielded two teams. South African ultimate is well and truly on the up! We’ll keep pushing for the best that we can offer and this tournament was a fantastic indication of where we are headed. We thoroughly enjoyed hosting everyone and can’t wait to do it again next year.
